pair of wood-fired mugs

An important thing to notice about these two beauties is that they are not round -- firing them on their sides in a wood-fired kiln for five days gave them that wonderfully dramatic pattern of ash & flashing on their sides, & holding for so long at high heat softened their shape.  There won't ever be two more exactly like them as a result.  (Personally, I wish I could get that kind of surface on every pot I make.  :>)  For the lover of unique gems & of generous amounts of coffee, they are each approximately 3.25" high, 6" wide, & 4.5" deep.  As with all of my pots that are meant for your kitchen and table, they are food-, microwave-, and dishwasher-safe, though pots will last longest if you hand wash them.  You can read more about wood- and salt-firing here.

latte mug (wood-fired)

Tall & roomy -- is it a latte mug or a beer stein?  You decide.  Wood-firing for five days vitrified its exterior & gave it its unique gold-to-red variations, & a shino glaze lines the interior, lip, & top of the mug.  It is 6" high, 5" wide, & 3.75" deep.   As with all of my pots that are meant for your kitchen and table, it is food-, microwave-, and dishwasher-safe, though pots will last longest if you hand wash them.  You can read more about wood- and salt-firing here.

striped, soda-fired cup

This sweet little cup alternates wavy stripes of a glazed named "old yeller" with the stripes of unglazed clay that were vitrified & given that wonderful orange peel texture by the soda (a mixture of sodium carbonate & sodium borate) in the atmosphere of the kiln.  I also like its little square foot & its softly-squared shape.  :)  It is 3" in height, 3.25" in width & 3.25" in depth.  As with all of my pots that are meant for your kitchen and table, the cups are food-, microwave-, and dishwasher-safe, though pots will last longest if you hand wash them.

set of 4 wood-fired cups

These four beauties were fired for five days in an anagama (wood) kiln in Nelson County, VA, &, as unique products of that particular firing, there aren't another fours exactly like them.  The patterns on each were created by the fire & ash as it worked around the refractory wadding that left its mark on each pot, & they make a lovely set.  Each cup is approximately 3.25" in height & 4.25" in diameter.  You can read more about wood- and salt-firing here.  As with all of my pots that are meant for your kitchen and table, the cups are food-, microwave-, and dishwasher-safe, though pots will last longest if you hand wash them.

tea bowl with notched foot

I love cupping a tea bowl holding a warm drink, & I love playing with the details of making a seemingly-simple shape, so this guy was the answer to two wishes.  The dark stoneware & creamy glaze seem like they are meant for winter comfort sipping, & the notched foot adds that bit of delicacy its profile.  It is 3" high & 4.5" in diameter, & it was gas-fired.  As with all of my pots that are meant for your kitchen and table, it is food-, microwave-, and dishwasher-safe, though pots will last longest if you hand wash them.

pair of wood-fired cups

This handsome pair were fired sitting at an angle on refractory wadding for five days in a wood kiln in beautiful Nelson County, VA.  The pale, circular mark on each is where the wadding changed the way the ash, fire, & atmosphere of the kiln could get to the pot.  Their exteriors have no glaze on them except at the lip, meaning that satiny vitrified surface (on top of the striped texture I gave the outside of each) is all a product of wood-firing. (The interiors & lip are glazed w/ a lovely Japenese glaze called shino) Each cup is approx. 3.5" h. x 4.5" w. x 4.5" d.  You can read more about wood- and salt-firing here.  As with all of my pots that are meant for your kitchen and table, the cups are food-, microwave-, and dishwasher-safe, though pots will last longest if you hand wash them.

set of four cups

Whether holding wine, juice, or other, I think these little softly-squared cups feel good to hold & hope they'll lend to a small gathering.  Each cup is approx. 2.5" h. x 4" w. x 4" d., & they were gas-fired.  As with all of my pots that are meant for your kitchen and table, the cups are food-, microwave-, and dishwasher-safe, though pots will last longest if you hand wash them.

pair of light-green mugs

You've seen me make this shape of mug before, & I love the way the pale blue-green exterior (a thinner application of the same glaze on their darker interiors) gives attention to the surface of this pair.  Each mug is approx. 4.25" in height, 5" in width, & 3.75" in depth.  Gas-fired.   As with all of my pots that are meant for your kitchen and table, they are food-, microwave-, and dishwasher-safe, though pots will last longest if you hand wash them.

ridged tea bowl

This tea bowl (or miso bowl?) seems to me like it begs to be cupped in two hands, & I love the way this glaze breaks on the ridges of its iron-bearing clay body.  It is 3.25" in height & 4.75" in diameter & was gas-fired.  As with all of my pots that are meant for your kitchen and table, it is food-, microwave-, and dishwasher-safe, though pots will last longest if you hand wash them.

wood-fired tea bowl

This ovular tea bowl was fired on its side for four days in an anagama-style wood kiln in Amherst, VA, & you can see the way the ash melted & pooled uniquely around the texture of the pot & around the (since removed) wadding material that protected it from fusing with the kiln shelf.  It is 3.75" high and 4" wide.   As with all of my pots that are meant for your kitchen and table, it is food-, microwave-, and dishwasher-safe, though pots will last longest if you hand wash them.  You can read more about wood- and salt-firing here.

wood-fired tea bowl

This second, lovely ovular tea bowl was also fired on its side for four days in an anagama-style wood kiln in Amherst, VA, & you can see, again, the way the ash melted & pooled beautifully around the texture of the pot & around the (since removed) wadding material that protected it from fusing with the kiln shelf.  It is 3.5" high and 4" wide.   As with all of my pots that are meant for your kitchen and table, it is food-, microwave-, and dishwasher-safe, though pots will last longest if you hand wash them.  You can read more about wood- and salt-firing here.

tiled tea bowl

Maybe it's a recovering-printmaker thing, but I wouldn't be unhappy if all of my pottery could look like weathered tile, as I think this tea bowl does.  (look at the way the glaze breaks over the texture even on the interior! :>)  Gas-fired.  As with all of my pots that are meant for your kitchen and table, it is food-, microwave-, and dishwasher-safe, though pots will last longest if you hand wash them.
